President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan welcomed US Vice President Kamala Harris during her first visit to Vietnam.

 

The visit lasted from August 24th to 26th. Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan welcomed and chatted with US Vice President Kamala Harris at the Presidential Palace this morning. The welcoming ceremony was held on the second day of the US Vice President’s visit to Vietnam. This is also the first visit to Vietnam of a serving Vice President of the United States.

The main contents of the meeting:

1. From US Vice President Kamala Harris

• She expressed her honor to be the first US Vice President to visit Vietnam and her gratitude for the thoughtful reception of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan.
• The Vice President emphasized that the United States supports a rich, strong, independent and prosperous Vietnam which continues to innovate, expand international integration, and play an increasingly important role in ASEAN and the region.
• She expressed her praise for Vietnam’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and affirmed once again the United States will continue to support Vietnam to fight the pandemic.

2. From President Nguyen Xuan Phuc

• President Nguyen Xuan Phuc reiterated that Vietnam has always pursued an independent foreign policy and is ready to be a reliable partner, making positive contributions to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
• The President emphasized that Vietnam is ready to continue to consolidate the comprehensive partnership that is deepening, effective, solid and mutually beneficial with the United States, on the basis of respect for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, cooperation for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
• He also expressed his deep gratitude to President Joe Biden for aiding 5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam in the context that the whole country is struggling against the epidemic.

3. Important highlights regarding future development cooperation between Vietnam and the United States

• The two heads of countries agreed to strengthen and promote cooperation in many fields, especially economic cooperation, trade and investment, security and defense, overcoming war consequences, and responding to war, climate change, health, education, science and technology, etc.
• President Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized the importance of the bilateral economic and trade system and highly appreciated the constructive spirit of the two sides to reach consensus on monetary policy issues.

This visit is made in the context that the relationship between Vietnam and the United States has been on a positive development track in recent years, especially in the fields of trade, maritime security and cooperation in response to Covid-19.
